Still in Green Tutrle Cay at the Leeward Yacht Club

ay
Day 19: Saturday March 14, 2015

It is windy today but the temperature is pleasant.  We climbed in the dinghy and headed for the other side of the sound and a walk to McIntosh Restaurant and Bakery for another fine breakfast.

The owner was by herself this morning so we got a chance to talk with her about her business and her family.  She has 4 children.  Three girls and a teen age boy.
Nicely decorated McIntosh Restaurant and Bakery
The girls have all graduated from high school with one now in med school in Costa Rica, one graduated from college in psychology and the other is in a two year school for culinary arts.  The boy wants to go to a tech school to learn motorcycle maintenance.  All of them have dual citizenship with both Bahamian and US credentials.  They were all born in the US.  The nice well decorated building that serves as their restaurant was built by her husband who was enjoying a beer for breakfast as we spoke.  Her passion is baking.  She makes the most luscious and attractive pies, cakes and pastries.  She loves the business but does not want to front the public. She hires her waitress to handle the customers.

Administrative Offices and Police Station of New Plymouth
I had Bahamian French toast with sausage and Janine had another ham and cheese omelet.  As we were leaving, we bought two key lime bars for our dinner tonight.

We motored back across the sound in the dinghy.  It is amazing how much more secure we feel in this new little boat than we did in Damn Dink.  This one doesn’t have the personality that the Dink had but it sure feels a lot safer.  The little 2.5 hp Honda pushes her along quite well.  Janine suggested that we have a contest amongst our blog followers to name her.  (She has performed well enough that we are now addressing her as a young girl.)  The only name thrown out so far is “Wilson” after the infamous soccer ball that was Tom Hanks’ companion in the movie “Cast Away.”  We offer the winner of the contest a ride in the new dink on Buckeye Lake in Ohio later this summer.  Flights to Ohio are not included in the contest.  We will take you to the lake in our pickup truck.

One discouraging thing that the folks deal with who travel in salt water is the phenomenon of rust.  I always assumed that stainless steel would not rust, however, the salt water does stain it and it develops spots of rust.  I spent a good part of the early afternoon using rubbing compound to remove the stains from the stainless fixtures on the boat but where the rust ran down onto the fiberglass, I need to come up with another solution.

We were back to our typical lunch with Janine having her tuna on fresh Bahamian wheat bread and I had my taco.

The remainder of the afternoon

And now let's play "Name That Dink"

The remainder of the afternoon was spent reading.  At one point, the fellow in the 40 plus foot cruiser fired up his diesels for some reason and let them idle for a while.  He was right up wind from us and our windows are about 4 feet above his exhaust pipes so the cabin on our boat began to fill with fumes.  We closed all of the ports and hatches and abandoned ship heading for the cabana near the pool with our books.

We returned to the boat before dinner and prepared our evening meal.  This evening we dined on fettuccini alfredo with chicken and had key lime bars from McIntosh Restaurant.

Interspersed throughout the day were conversations with the other folks who were staying here.  This has been a great stay.

  1. In addition to arranging their own air travel to Ohio, your contest winner may have to bring their own water in order to take a ride on Buckeye Lake. This big news here is that they may have to drain the lake this summer for fear that the dam will fail and flood the surrounding areas.

But, I love Janine's idea and I will be thinking of names...even if the prize is all washed up. Haha :)

    Enjoy your day!
