Belhaven to Broad Creek Anchorage

Day 11  Wednesday, April 26, 2017

You can monitor my trip at the link: Little Star's Progress Live

It was time to leave the jewel of a stop and head on south on our journey towards Oriental NC.  Of course, we couldn’t leave without one more wonderful meal.  We walked to the Gingerbread Bakery and Snack Bar for
Gingerbread Bakery and Snack
what I was told would be the best sausage gravy and biscuits around.  When I asked the waitress for their prize winning breakfast, she told me that they don’t have that on their menu.  So, I settled for sausage and an egg with stewed apples on the side.  Janine had apple oatmeal and Jim had another country ham biscuit.

The skies were overcast and the wind was blowing at about 10 knots towards the side of the boat as Jim skillfully maneuvered Little Star away from the dock.  We had a pleasant ride down the Pungo River, Amlico River, Goose Creek, Upper Spring Creek, Bay River, and Neuse River to Broad Creek

where we dropped anchor in a beautiful quiet region near the River Dunes Marina and Resort.

River Dunes is where I spent 3 days last fall when I traveled the ICW by myself.  This fabulous place is filled with luxurious condos and all of the amenities that go along with a resort setting.  They even hosted a croquet tournament while we were there. We didn’t venture into their marina on this trip.

I contacted the West Marine folks in Oriental and they are having a new windless shipped to their store scheduled for arrival by Saturday morning.  In preparation for the installation of the new device, we pulled all of the chain and anchor rode out of the chain locker and I crawled inside to remove the mounting bolt and wiring.  If all goes well, it should be an easy replacement when we get the new windless.

Jim grilled some great pork chops for dinner and we added very small servings of mashed potatoes and cheesy rice for our evening dining

pleasure.  With a glass of Merlot,  we enjoyed a fitting feast for our last night together out on the water.  Jim will be joining a group of his cycling buddies who are driving in from Parkersburg to participate in the North Carolina Coastal Ride in which 1,600 riders will converge on the little town of Oriental for two to three days of riding though the Carolina countryside.  We will keep the boat in a marina in Oriental during the event and Jim will use it as his base and entertainment center for his friends.  If the parts come in for the anchor system, Janine and I will then head back to the Chesapeake and Jim will ride with his friends to Jamestown, VA for another cycle ride.
I finally succumbed to sleep at a bit after 9:00.
